LnT at hoffler creek

You've found an egret sign! This scavenger hunt is designed to help you discover the seven Leave No Trace Principles. Learn more below about how this principle helps protect the wildlife and habitat here at Hoffler Creek.

Principle 1: Plan Ahead & Prepare

Proper planning is key to a safe, enjoyable visit that protects our habitat and wildlife. Your preparation helps us minimize human impact at Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve.

To plan ahead, consider the following:

Know Regulations

As a wildlife preserve, Hoffler Creek limits activities to passive use to protect the habitat. The following activities are prohibited:

Consider Trail Conditions

Our staff and volunteers work hard to maintain our trails. Our trails are relatively flat and easy, however, consider the abilities of participants in your group:

  • Trail Length: The main Lake Ballard trail is a one-mile loop, with five shorter trails branching off.

  • Trail Difficulty: Certain trails have significant roots, like the Riparian Trail, which may be difficult for strollers, wheelchairs, or those with mobility issues.

Uncertain about conditions? Stop in or call the Visitor Center at 757-686-8684.

Scheduling your visit

Plan Your Visit:

  • Hours: Tuesday–Sunday, 10 am–4 pm.

  • Scheduling Groups: We ask groups of six or more to please split into smaller groups to minimize disturbance.

  • Need to stay together? You must coordinate with staff in advance. This helps us manage parking, kayak rental, and trail capacity.
