Information for Volunteers

Volunteers must be 16 or older. Volunteers younger than 16 can be accommodated on a case-by-case basis and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. If under 18, a liability waiver must be completed by a parent or guardian prior to volunteering.

Please be aware that most of our volunteer work will take place outdoors and require some level of manual labor. Volunteer work is not available during inclement weather. There is a possibility that you will encounter bugs, snakes, or other small animals while working outside. You may be asked to use pruners, loppers, shovels, rakes, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, or other tools, depending on your skill level and the nature of the project at hand. Examples of possible projects include but are not limited to removing brush piles/debris from trails, widening trails, trimming invasive vines from trees, or helping with kayak tours and rentals. Thank you for considering this when registering!

**Insect repellant is highly recommended during warmer months. Refillable water bottles are encouraged year round. P
lease come prepared.**

If you have a group interested in completing a volunteer project, give us a call at 757-686-8684 or send us an email, and we will work with you to set up a date, time, and appropriate project.

We host a Volunteer Workday on the third Saturday of each month.
To attend, please sign up through Volunteer Hampton Roads.

Outside of our monthly workdays, individual volunteers are welcome daily during our open hours. Register here by choosing a day and start time that works for you. Shifts are split into 2-hour time slots, but feel free to spend as much or as little time as you prefer. Just be sure to sign in and out at the Visitor's Center before and after your shift.
