CNU Collects Fish for Hoffler Creek Project
During the summer, CNU professor Jessica Thompson and six of her students studied the aquatic habitat at Hoffler Creek to learn how the marsh and mudflats are used by small fish. Using minnow traps in the creek channel at low tide and in the marsh at high tide, they collected more than 700 fish, mostly mummichogs, from Hoffler Creek. During the fall, they will analyze the stomach contents of these fish in the lab and compare the quantity of food in the fishes’ stomachs and the diet items they consume to determine why they move from one habitat to the other each day.
