Paddle Guide Advanced Training and New Moon Paddle for Volunteers

  • Hoffler Creek Wildlife Preserve 4510 Twin Pines Road Portsmouth, VA, 23703 United States

All former, current, and new kayak program volunteers here at Hoffler Creek are invited to join us for an exciting and informative evening on the water.

Starting at 6 p.m., certified ACA Kayaking instructor and Hoffler Creek enthusiast, Mike Reiss, will spend a couple of hours going over kayaking technique. He'll enlighten us with information ranging from the proper form to use for different paddle strokes all the way to handling emergencies like a capsized kayak and more.

Then at 8 p.m., join James, Hoffler Creek's Communication and Programs Coordinator, in launching your kayak for a night time tour of Hoffler Creek. This New Moon Paddle is available to volunteers that plan to participate in our upcoming kayak season only. We hope that paddling with very little light will help even the most experienced of us keep in mind how disorienting an evening paddle can be to some less familiar as we proceed through our summer season.

Afterwards we'll enjoy a cold drink fireside at our headquarters to share insights and experiences from this and past kayaking adventures.

To participate in this event, please email James at hofflercreek@hofflercreek.org. Additional participation in a volunteer orientation and basic kayak helper training are necessary for each kayak guide.
